Today, the Bureau of Labor Statistics posted a report outlining job gains in private and public sectors and an uptick in unemployment even though new jobs were added. This is due to the hundreds of thousands of Americans who had quit looking for work altogether and are starting to look again.

According to the Bureau, national unemployment is 9.9%, up from 9.7% from the past several months.

“A little over a year has passed since Congress passed a $1 trillion ‘jobs’ bill and yet unemployment is still increasing,” Ribble said.  “There are 15.3 million people still seeking jobs.  And even according to the Obama Administration’s own numbers, Steve Kagen’s stimulus bill continues to do little for the unemployed in the 8th District. Don’t the struggling, out of work families in northeastern Wisconsin deserve better?”

Economists estimate that national unemployment will remain around the 10% level through the end of 2010.  Many cite the uncertainties associated with additional federal legislation, including the costs of doing business associated with cap-and-trade and of the new health care reform legislation, which both assess tax increases.

“Congressman Kagen voted for the $1 trillion ‘jobs’ bills, and other massive spending bills in Congress,” Ribble said.  “The best thing that Congress can do now is go home and stop passing legislation that will further damage the economy.”

Reid Ribble is a former Kaukauna-area small business owner who has created jobs and balanced payrolls.
